Higher Work Hour Limit Starts This November

Good news for those planning to study in New Zealand! Starting November 3, 2025, international students will be able to work up to 25 hours per week during the school term—a boost from the current 20-hour limit.

This update is part of the government’s efforts to improve international education and offer better support to students while they study and live in the country.

What’s Changing?

Here’s a quick summary of the key updates:

  • More part-time work hours: Students can work 25 hours per week during term time, starting November 3.

  • Expanded work rights: Tertiary students in approved Study Abroad or Exchange programs—even one-semester courses—can now work during their studies.

  • New visa needed for course/provider changes: Planning to switch schools or downgrade your program level? You’ll now need to apply for a new student visa, not just a variation.

Who Will Be Affected?

New student visa holders: Any visa approved from November 3 onward will automatically include the new 25-hour limit—even if the application was sent earlier.

Current visa holders (with 20-hour limit): You’ll need to apply for a variation of conditions or get a new student visa if you want the added hours. Keep in mind, application fees will apply. Secondary school students (Years 12 and 13) : You still need written permission from both your school and your parents before taking on part-time work—even with the new limit.

Students on summer break or scheduled holidays: If your current visa allows full-time work during breaks, this rule still applies. You can wait until after summer to update your visa if needed.

Quick Stats

  • Over 40,000 student visa holders in NZ have work rights

  • Nearly 30,000 of those visas expire before March 2026

  • Not all students are expected to apply for the 5-hour increase—some may wait for renewal

What You Can Do

  • If you’re applying soon: No need to worry—student visas granted after November 3 will include the change automatically.

  • Already holding a visa? You can apply for the extra hours through a variation or wait until your next visa application.

  • Still in high school? Make sure your school and parents approve your part-time job.

Why This Is Great News

This is a step forward for international education in New Zealand. More flexibility to work means students can better support themselves, gain local experience, and enjoy a more balanced life during their studies.
